Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance is my uptown, NYC creative community. NoMa Paseo De Las Artes competition was founded in 2008, to commemorate the spirit of living in West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Artist living between these geographical locations are welcome to submit original visual artwork, for consideration.
History: Uptown Arts Stroll.
“The 23rd Uptown Arts Stroll/Paseo de las Artes takes place throughout June 2025 from West 125th to West 220th Street in West Harlem, Washington Heights & Inwood.
The Uptown Arts Stroll started as a volunteer organized one-day event the Sunday before Thanksgiving 2003 and grew into a month-long festival celebrating northern Manhattan’s visual and performing artists.
The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) has produced the Uptown Arts Stroll since 2008″
Living between Inwood and Washington Heights, I decided to collage several images into a single artwork. Combining graphic design, illustration and typography to articulate place and identity.
For me, The Cloisters art museum, United Palace and City College are embryonic urban symbols. To say nothing of my fascination with Inwood multicultural scene, akin to Walt Whitman obsession with the Brooklyn Bride.
The Bodega invokes modular moods, distilled and baked with nostalgic symbolic connections. Similarly important is the notion behind understanding how the final image was composed, while obeying NoMa requirements:
- Unpublished original artwork
- Reproducible on a large scale (up to 6 feet high)
- Artwork must include the phrase “Uptown Arts Stroll/Paseo de las Artes”
- Artwork must be in a vertical format and be legible in various sizes for print and social media
- Artists may only submit one (1) artwork for consideration

Together with understanding earlier winners, I wanted to develop an image instead of using traditional illustrative techniques.
Capturing the spirit of living uptown using graphic design tactics, instead of relying on imagination imagery.
If selected, my goal is to show the collage artwork along with several essay motifs, incorporating essays and films. Dedicated to uplifting creative communities, where ever we choose to coexist. In our ever connected future, past and gift to humanity. We are all, god’s connected children.
